Rachel Notley’s NDP are campaigning for a blanket lockdown across Alberta.
This despite warnings from small businesses that a second lockdown would cause permanent and long-term damage.
The Canadian Federation of Business has warned that 40 per cent of small businesses would not survive a second lock down.
Jason Kenney called the decision last Spring to indiscriminately lock down businesses in favour of big box stores was a mistake.
In the spring, we made a stupid mistake with restrictions that tilted the playing field toward big box stores by keeping them open, while closing our small businesses. For that, I apologize.— Jason Kenney (@jkenney) November 25, 2020
With these carefully targeted measures to slow the spread, won’t make that mistake again pic.twitter.com/GlABMuGTZI
Rachel Notley disagrees. She wants to see businesses shut down and to see tens of thousands of Albertans put out of work.
In an interview with Danielle Smith, she answered unequivocally “yes” when asked if she would shut down all restaurants and bars.
Alberta is taking extraordinary measures to protect Albertans during the current pandemic and health crisis, including strong new public health measures. But we must balance both lives and livelihoods.
